SINCE 1884
More than a club.
A Living Tradition.
The German-American Society is a cultural hub in Omaha where heritage comes to life through community, celebration, and shared experiences.

Since 1884, we’ve been bringing people together to connect with German culture in a way that feels welcoming, relevant, and fun—whether you have deep roots or are simply curious to learn more.
Who We Are
We are a community built on tradition, connection, and a love of culture. The German-American Society exists to preserve and share German heritage while creating a place where people can gather, build friendships, and make lasting memories.

From lifelong members to first-time visitors, there’s a place for everyone here.
What We Do

We create opportunities for people to experience German culture in meaningful and memorable ways:

Celebrate
Festivals like Oktoberfest, Maifest, and Christmas in Germany bring our community together through food, music, and tradition.

Connect
Our sub-clubs and activities offer something for everyone—from singing and dancing to card playing and social groups—creating space for friendships to grow.

Experience Culture
Through language, food, movement, music, traditions, and hands-on experiences, we bring German heritage to life for all generations.
Why it Matters
German heritage has played an important role in shaping Omaha’s history and culture—from early immigrant communities who helped build the city, to the traditions, values, and celebrations that continue to influence it today.

The German-American Society carries that legacy forward by creating a place where culture isn’t just preserved—it’s experienced. Here, traditions are not confined to the past or displayed behind glass. They’re shared through festivals, food, music, language, and community gatherings that bring people together in meaningful ways.

By blending history with everyday experiences, the Society ensures that German heritage remains active, relevant, and accessible—something to be lived, celebrated, and passed down for generations to come.

Our History
Founded in 1884 as the Omaha Plattdeutscher Verein, the German-American Society has been part of Omaha’s story for over a century. Established by immigrants from Northern Germany, the Society quickly became a gathering place for community, culture, and connection.

Over the years, the organization grew alongside the city—moving locations, expanding membership, and eventually building a permanent home in 1908. At its peak, events like German Day brought thousands together, making it a well-known destination across the Midwest.

Through challenging periods including World Wars, Prohibition, and the Great Depression, the Society endured thanks to strong leadership and a deep commitment to community. In 1950, reflecting its growing and diverse membership, the organization officially became the German-American Society.

Today, it continues to honor its roots while welcoming all who want to experience and celebrate German culture.
